Supplements for Dog Skin Allergies

Many pet owners are concerned that their dog has allergies. Allergies are an immune system reaction to foreign substances. There are several different types of allergies in dogs, including

  • skin allergies
  • food allergies
  • environmental allergies

Your dog’s allergic reactions may vary, and several types of allergies can overlap. Skin allergies in dogs are most often caused by allergies to fleas, food, and environmental allergens:

Supplement dog skin allergies

1 - Flea allergy-triggered dermatitis is an allergic reaction to fleabites. Its symptoms include extreme itchiness, especially at the base of the tail, and red inflamed skin. Owners may also see signs of fleas, such as dirt (“flea dirt”?), or see the pests themselves.

2- Food allergies – As in humans, symptoms of true food allergies allergic reactions to food can range in symptoms from hives, facial swelling, and itchiness, to gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea or a combination of both. Though many owners suspect their dog may have food allergies, the exact prevalence of food allergies in dogs remains unknown. As with food allergies, food sensitivities can also cause itchy ears and paws, and may be accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms.

3- Environmental allergens - Allergic reactions or atopic dermatitis are often caused by environmental allergens like pollen, dust and mold. The estimated prevalence of atopic dermatitis in dogs is approximately 10–15%. In the majority of dogs, this type of allergy is seasonal, therefore your dog may experience itchiness during some times of the year. As with food allergies, the areas of the body most often affected are the ears and paws. However, areas such as the ankles, groin, muzzle, eyes, and between the toes can also be affected.

Holistic treatment for dog allergies

Skin allergies all carry a risk of triggering a secondary infection. When dogs scratch and bite irritated skin, cuts may then become infected by yeast and bacteria.

If you suspect your dog may have allergies, we recommend consulting with a veterinarian.

There are a few options for treating allergies in dogs. In addition to dietary changes and anti-histamine medications, anti-inflammatory supplements may be helpful.

PCQ Pet is different than other supplements for dogs, because it contains the body’s own anti-inflammatory, palmitoylethanolamide or PEA, along with other anti-inflammatory ingredients, like curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric.

PCQ Pet contains a specific, patent-pending ratio of PEA, turmeric and quercetin, a plant flavonoid that was found to have synergistic activity on inflammation in university research. PCQ Pet was found by veterinarians to be an effective supplement for large and small dogs who suffer from allergies and its related symptoms.

Collaborating with Texas A&M University researchers, Vital Pet Sciences created PCQ Pet, a next-generation anti-inflammatory supplement  featuring palmitoylethanolamide, or PEA. PEA is the “body’s own anti- inflammatory”, a fatty acid made in every cell of every mammal.

The researchers found that when PEA was combined with a certain ratio of turmeric extract and quercetin, the effect was much greater than any one ingredient alone. These ingredients together led to an exponential increase in cellular anti-inflammatory activity. It was a finding so groundbreaking, the university filed for patents on the formula now known as PCQ Pet

Vital Pet Sciences PCQ Pet™ is researched for safety and efficacy, and contains only the highest-grade micronized PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) with turmeric concentrated for curcuminoids and quercetin. PCQ Pet is carefully made according to human supplement Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

PCQ Pet™ is formulated as a convenient powder you can add right to their food for maximum absorption, with dosing according to your dog’s body weight and needs.
