SUPPLEMENTS AND NUTRITION FOR HOT SPOTS IN DOGS

Are you concerned your dog has a hot spot? Hot spots are initially caused by any condition that causes your dog to feel itchy. Also known as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots are localized skin inflammation that occurs together with bacterial infection. It commonly starts as a small red area that looks like an insect bite. However, dog hot spots quickly worsen, spread, and develop into a hot, red, weeping, and painful lesions.

Hot spots are accompanied by swelling and hair loss and appear anywhere, though most often on the head, limbs, and hips. The affected area is damp or moist and may secrete pus or weep, which can lead to crusty and matted fur. Hot spots are painful and very itchy, and will expand quickly in area as scratching continues to damage the skin in the area.

The main causes of hot spots in dogs are scratching, chewing and excessive licking of the area which perpetuate damage to skin, more inflammation and development of bacterial infections. All of this makes itching worse leading to a continuous cycle of itching and scratching.

Common causes of the hot spot itching/scratching cycle in dogs include:

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Food allergies
  • Parasites
  • Skin or ear infection
  • Dermatitis from flea allergy
  • Environmental irritants
  • Stress or tension resulting in excessive licking
  • A dirty or matted coat or moist coat

If you suspect your dog has hot spots, we recommend consulting with a veterinarian.

SUPPORTING HOT SPOTS IN DOGS WITH SUPPLEMENTS

There are a few options for treating hots spots in dogs. In addition to topical medications, anti-inflammatory supplements may be helpful for hot spots in dogs.

Vital Pet Sciences’ PCQ Pet™ anti-inflammatory supplement for dogs is university-researched to quickly reduce inflammation in dogs.

Supplement for dog hot spots

Unlike other supplements for dogs, PCQ Pet contains the body’s own anti-inflammatory, PEA or palmitoylethanolamide, along with other anti-inflammatory ingredients, like standardized turmeric extract. It also contains a specific ratio of PEA, turmeric and quercetin that was found to have a synergistic effect on inflammation in university research, and was found to be an effective supplement for large and small dogs who suffer from hot spot-related pain and inflammation.

HOW PCQ PET CAN HELP

PEA is in a class of natural compounds that help to regulate inflammation and pain in from hot spots. All animals naturally produce PEA, but studies show that they produce less PEA in the areas where they are in pain. Over time, this chronic inflammation speeds the vicious cycle of scratching and infection.

Collaborating with Texas A&M University researchers, Vital Pet Sciences created PCQ Pet, a next-generation anti-inflammatory supplement  featuring palmitoylethanolamide, or PEA. PEA is the “body’s own anti- inflammatory”, a fatty acid made in every cell of every mammal.

The researchers found that when PEA was combined with a certain ratio of turmeric extract and quercetin, antioxidants found in many foods, the ingredients led to an exponential increase in cellular anti-inflammatory activity. It was a finding so groundbreaking, the university filed for patents on the formula now known as PCQ Pet.

Clinical trials in dogs and humans have shown that PEA can quickly reduce inflammation and pain, and in some cases reverse the damage occurring to your dog’s skin. By taking PCQ Pet over the long-term, your four-legged friend can enjoy the benefits of a hot spot supplement for dogs that actually works directly on your dog’s pain and inflammation.
